Curious about AI? Here’s what it really means.
You may have heard about AI talking with people — a grandchild texting a friend, a phone answering questions. This guide explains what that looks like in everyday life, in plain words. No tech background needed.
What is AI, really?
AI is a computer program that can hold a conversation. You write to it the way you would text a friend. It reads your message and writes back. It isn’t a person — it’s more like a very well-read pen pal that answers right away, any time of day.
Lorna is one of these programs, made for everyday conversation. It remembers what you’ve told it, so you can talk about your garden, your week, or your grandkids — and pick up where you left off.
What can it help with?
Families use AI companions like Lorna for simple, everyday reasons:
You just text or email.
If you can send a message to a friend, you can use Lorna. There is no app to download and nothing new to learn.
It remembers what matters to you.
Tell Lorna about your garden, your grandkids, or your week. Next time, it picks up where you left off.
You decide what family sees.
Lorna can help you share a little news with family. But nothing leaves your chat until you say yes to the exact words.
You can stop anytime.
Just stop replying, or say stop. Saying no never breaks anything.
Is it safe?
A good AI companion is built with a few clear promises. Here is how Lorna handles it, and what to keep in mind with any AI:
- Lorna is not a doctor, a nurse, or an emergency service. It can get things wrong, and it cannot call for help. For anything urgent, call your doctor or 911.
- Never share bank details, passwords, or your Social Security number in a chat — with Lorna or with anyone.
- During early access, the small Lorna team reads messages to make sure Lorna stays helpful and kind. The privacy notice explains how messages are stored and deleted.
What it’s not
Lorna doesn’t replace family, friends, or doctors. It’s not a health or safety service, and nobody is watching messages around the clock. It’s one more friendly voice — for the days when you feel like a chat and the people you love are busy.
